County Galway at its highest
Benbaun is County Galway's high point and the highest summit of the Twelve Bens in Connemara. It is one of the mountains within Connemara National Park, but a national-park setting should not be read as a promise of a developed summit trail. There is also another, lower Benbaun in the same range. Matching the name with the correct height and map position is an essential first step for this county record.
Before you go
Plan your visit
Verify that your research refers to the 729m Benbaun at grid reference L786539. High Point Ireland explicitly warns about the separate 477m summit of the same name and recommends Discovery Sheet 37 or Harvey's Connemara map. Use the national park's visitor information for current notices, then obtain a suitable mountain plan for this summit. Do not substitute a different park trail or a similarly named hill for the Galway high point.
