County Donegal at its highest
Errigal is County Donegal's high point and the highest mountain in the Derryveagh range. Its quartzite profile is a defining feature of the west Donegal landscape around Dunlewey and Gweedore. The mountain also lends its name to Slí an Earagail, a much longer regional walking route. That distinction is helpful when researching a visit: descriptions of the waymarked circuit do not describe the same outing as an ascent of the county summit.
Before you go
Plan your visit
Separate the Errigal summit plan from Slí an Earagail when comparing information and maps. The latter is a regional trail through moorland, coast and settlements; its advertised distance is not an Errigal summit-walk distance. High Point Ireland recommends Discovery Sheet 1 for the mountain. Consult current local information on the summit approach and path conditions, then choose a day and route suited to your group's mountain experience rather than the mountain's photographic popularity.
